LF to issue petition for release of imprisoned leader March 10, 2003

Discours et Textes, Samir Geagea

Officials from the banned Lebanese Forces are preparing a “national consensus” petition asking for the release of imprisoned leader Samir Geagea.

An official with the LF told The Daily Star that the group was seeking to take advantage of the positive atmosphere directed toward the Christian community in the wake of the Maronite church’s stance on preparations for a war against Iraq and the Syrian regime.
The official said that the LF would direct its petition-signing campaign at all of the country’s sects, stressing the “national consensus” nature of the effort and the banned group’s support for the Taif Accord.

The official said that the effort was being staged in the run-up to April 21, the ninth anniversary of Geagea’s imprisonment on charges of masterminding a bombing of a church in Zouk Mikail.
